Altenew Educator - Impressive Heat Embossing

Hello there!  Today I am back with my next project for the Altenew Educator Certification Program.  This class is "Impressive Heat Embossing" and I got to do one of my favorite techniques which is watercolor over a heat embossed background.

Today's project is a special one because it's a card I made for my best friend who's birthday is Tuesday, November 13th.  Gloria has been my best friend for many years.  I met her when we lived in Frisco, TX and I think she moved there in 2000.  We became friends through a Creative Memories Class that I taught at my next door neighbors house through another of my friends, Xochil.  It wasn't long before Gloria and I were "thick as thieves" and through the years we've become even closer.  Even though I spent 8½ years living in Oklahoma, she still came to visit me and when I came here to see my daughter and grandkids, I would make sure to see her as often as possible.  Several times over the years that I was gone, we would still get to share Christmas and Thanksgiving meals.  My daughter and son-in-law are gracious hosts and would always let me invite her to the special family dinner that we traditionally hold on Christmas Eve.

It was hard being away from each other during the years in Oklahoma so as you can imagine, we see each other as often as possible now that we're closer to each other.  I don't know how much you all know about the Dallas area, but a 40-minute drive is nothing.  She still lives in the same house in Frisco still so it's about an hour for her to drive here from her house.  I go to Frisco pretty often as two of my doctors are there. But I'm normally running around doing other tests and don't often get time to visit when I'm there as she is at work.  We've had at least 1 weekend together every month since we've moved back to Texas and she is the most frequent visitor in my guest room.  We spend a lot of time making cards and a lot of time outside on our back deck, sometimes deep in conversation, and other times just relaxing.  We watch movies and hang out.

All of this is just to say I wanted to create a beautiful card for her birthday and heat embossing wows her every single time.  I chose the Simon Says Stamp Rebecca Lace Background Stamp for my card, which is one of my absolute favorites!  I stamped the image in my Original MISTI onto a 5 x 7 piece of Fabriano Artistico Extra White Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper.  This is a very detailed stamp with fine lines and it can be hard to get a good impression, so I inked it up with Versamark two times before adding Antique Gold Embossing Powder to it.  I could see a place in the center of the image where I did not get it inked up well the first time so rather than trying to fix it or cover it after the fact, I decided to just ink it twice to make sure all the areas were covered with Versamark. I inspected it carefully before adding the embossing powder and I got a perfect image.  This was somewhat of a surprise since I'm kind of out of practice with heat embossing lately and forgot to use my powder tool first.  So I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I got a clean image.

I wanted to use a Wet-on-Wet technique for the background so that my colors would blend and move seamlessly. I chose to use Altenew Re-inkers in Puffy Heart, Coral Berry, and Maple Yellow. After wetting the entire panel of paper, I started adding a diagonal area of Maple Yellow from the upper left to the bottom right as I wanted the other two colors from each side to blend into the yellow. I let that dry a little bit but while the paper was still damp, I added Coral Berry with a good amount of water to the upper right portion of the panel. Next, I added Puffy Heart to the bottom left of the panel and let all of those colors dry a little bit. Once the excess water was evaporated, I went back into each area adding more intense color while the panel was still damp to kind of brighten it up a bit. Once all the excess water was evaporated again, I sprayed it with some Iridescent Gold Shimmer Mist from Tattered Angels which helps the blends be an even smoother transition from color to color. I set it in my window sill to dry well. With the shorter winter days, the sun comes in through the window much earlier and at the time, it was in full force in my window so it didn't take very long to dry.

Once the panel was dry, I lined up my WPLUS9 Stitched Rectangle Die (from the Gift Card Layers set) and die cut it where I wanted.  I adhered it to a top folding Card Base made from Stampers Select White Cardstock.  I chose the Simon Says Stamp Big Happy a word die and cut it from Gold Foiled Cardstock.  Then using a sentiment from the Papertrey Ink Painted Petals Stamp Set (2016 Anniversary Set), I stamped Birthday Wishes onto a strip of black cardstock with Versamark and heat set it with Antique Gold Embossing Powder.  I used some pink pearl gems from Hero Arts to embellish the card which finishes off my project.  I love how this card came out and I know she will love it also.  We aren't celebrating her birthday until next weekend, so I'm saving it to give to her then.

I hope you all enjoyed my project for this class and that you'll give it a try.  Wet on Wet backgrounds are among the easiest of watercolor techniques to do and no two cards will ever look the same.

Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge featuring Stampendous

Hello!  I'm back with my post for this week's Designer in the Spotlight at Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge Blog.  This week our theme is "Anything Goes" and we are featuring products from Stampendous. You don't have to use Stampendous products to enter the challenge, but if you have some, we would love to see them used. This is my last week in the Designer Spotlight and it has been a treat to get to create alongside some of my favorite ladies! Thank you so much for having me along this month. You've left such sweet comments for me here on my blog and I really appreciate it.

Simon Says Stamp generously provides a $50.00 Gift Voucher each week for each of their blog challenges. Winners are selected from all of the entries by Random Draw each week.  Thank you, Heidi, for providing that each week.

For my card, I started with a piece of Arches Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper and heat embossed my images using Versamark and Simon Says Stamp Antique Gold Embossing Powder.  When I buy the pads of watercolor paper, I take them to Kinkos and have them cut into 4.5 x 6 inch panels so they are a little bit larger than the size I need when making a card. I like to die cut my background panels for that super crisp and clean cut so the smaller size makes it easy.

Whenever you do heat embossing of your outline images, this creates a channel for the water to flow in. Easy-peasy!  I worked in a Jewelry Store many years ago where we sold lots of loose diamonds and created custom mountings for engagement, wedding and dinner style rings.  Many of the smaller stones were set into a channel to keep them contained and water works the same way.  I'm just creating a little gold channel when I heat emboss.  You can use any color of embossing powder that you like.  I just happen to like this one the most.  I go through about 6 jars of it a year. I do a lot of heat embossing and the most important thing is to use some kind of a powder tool first!

For all of my watercoloring today, I wanted something easy, so I smooshed a bit of Distress Ink onto an acrylic block and picked it up with a water brush to color my images.  For the Lilacs, I used Seedless preserves and the darker blooms just have additional layers of color on them and the same is true for the leaves and butterfly.  The leaves were done with Mowed Lawn Distress Ink and the butterfly with Peacock Feathers Ink.  This is an easy way to color without the stress of trying to use "real" watercolors in the correct technical manner.

Once all of the painting was finished and dry, I went back in with my Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pen and gave some shimmer to all of the images, especially the butterfly and let it dry again. Once it was dry, I die cut all of the images with the coordinating dies.  I cut a stitched rectangle using the WPLUS9 Gift Card Layers Stitched Rectangle Die to cut a white background panel and did a bit of ink blending with some Tumbled Glass Distress Ink.  I used a combination of Thin 3D Foam Squares, Scotch 3D Foam Tape and Ranger Multi Medium Matte to adhere the elements to the background panel and I put a piece of fun foam behind that panel to give a little bit more dimension.  I really considered adding for sequins or confetti but in the end, I liked the simpler image much better.

For the sentiment, I used the Simon Says Stamp "oh hello there" die to die cut the sentiment, but just used the word "hello".  I love the handwriting of this die (Kristina Werner's I'm sure) and it's one that I use often to send cards to friends.

Thank you so much for stopping by today to see my card!  I appreciate all of the kind and encouraging comments.  I've linked the supplies I've used below for your convenience (Affiliate Links may be used at no additional cost to you).

Photo Inspiration at Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge

Hello! I am back for another Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge March Designer In the Spotlight Post. This week we are featuring Your Next Stamp products for our theme of Easter Inspired. You don't have to use Your Next Stamp products to enter the challenge, but if you have some, we would love to see them used.

Simon Says Stamp generously provides a $50.00 Gift Voucher each week for each of their blog challenges. I actually won one of these right after Christmas and got to splurge on a purchase. That was a lot of fun!  Thanks again to Heidi for providing that each week.

We have this beautiful inspiration image and colors to inspire us this week.  My card uses the Hoppy Friends Stamp Set from Your Next Stamp along with a few other Simon Says Stamp Products and a bit of no-line coloring.

This is my first attempt at a no-line coloring look so I started by putting the image in my Mini MISTI and stamping it onto X-Press It Blending Cardstock which is made specifically for use with Copic or other alcohol markers.  It is silky smooth and I find it much easier to achieve the look I want with much less work vs. using a heavy cardstock. I stamped in Barely Beige Ink which is perfect for a no line coloring look.  I'm not typically a fan of images that have been stamped in black and colored in, so I wanted to try this ink out today.  I got this color for this specific purpose but I haven't tried it before now. I could tell right away that it would be perfect for this technique. You can also use light colored Distress Inks to help those lines fade completely away.
I have a moderately sized collection of Copic Markers but I knew that my Warm Greys would be just the ticket to go with the Barely Beige Ink so I pulled them out.  I ended up using only two markers with a very light touch of Colorless Blender for the bunnies.  Most of the bunnies were done with the W-1 Marker using a short flicking stroke to mimic their fur.  Occasionally I would use W-3 to add in a bit of darker color. For the inside of the ears and the tiny noses, I used two different colors; R11 for the bunny on the right and RV10 for the one on the left.  Like people, I assume they all have different tones in their natural coloring. I tried to start at the top of the head and work my way inward, much in the same way their hair would  naturally grow.  I've never actually had a rabbit for a pet so I did it the way my small dogs have it.  I'm assuming it would be similar on all animals so if my bunnies look like Yorkies, you'll know why.  Ha ha!  I have two Yorkies and we get them groomed every 6 weeks so they have the cute little teddy bear faces.

I just kept flicking in short strokes until eventually I filled up all the blank white space.  Then I went back in and added a bit more shading with the darker marker and then blended that back out with the W-1 Marker. Because I was flicking instead of coloring, it maintained some of the white and lightest tones for a natural look.  I hope it looks natural anyhow!  I am not a certified Copic Colorist and I have only minimal skills, but I was really pleased with how these little cuties came out. They aren't meant to be accurate, they are only meant to be cute!

Once I had the coloring finished, I used some Stitched Square dies from MFT to cut the bunnies out and a coordinating mat in Simon Says Stamp Cotton Candy Cardstock.  I mounted that to a background panel of  Simon Says Stamp Lavender Cardstock. I cut another Stitched Rectangles from Simon Says Stamp Surf Blue Cardstock and made a card base from Simon Says Stamp Mint Cardstock. I die cut two white and one gold "Easter" and adhered them together and then to the card with Ranger Multi Medium Matte. I stamped the "happy" sentiment on a scrap of white cardstock with Versamark and heat embossed it using Simon Says Stamp Antique Gold Embossing Powder and put a narrow strip of foam tape on the left hand side and adhered that to my card.  I added a few touches of Nuvo Dew Drops in Rosewater and Key Lime for a finishing touch.

I hope you'll be inspired by our challenge graphic and join us over at the Simon Says Stamp Blog. Don't forget, you could win a $50 Gift Voucher! Be sure to stop by next week as we are featuring Altenew!
